What is a sensory toy?

From birth to childhood, children use their senses to explore, learn, and understand the world around them. The learning process is greatly enhanced by interacting with the environment through touch, taste, etc. In essence, then, sensory play includes all activities that can stimulate the child's senses (touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight and hearing)

What are the advantages of sensory play?

Promotes brain development

Enabling children to actively use their senses leads to brain development as it creates new neural connections and pathways that support the development of skills to perform more complex activities and lead to optimal learning.

Encourages problem solving

When children manipulate objects and use them to explore their senses, they develop basic problem-solving strategies.

Assumptions, experiments, test hypotheses and conclusions are fundamental.

Improves fine motor skills

Sensory play includes activities that involve children touching, throwing, sorting, and moving. These activities serve to improve fine motor skills and coordination.

In this way, these skills are later used in self-sufficiency (e.g. buttons, zippers, shoelaces) and in writing.

Improves speaking skills

By exploring new senses, children discover new ways to describe objects they encounter around them.

By asking them questions like "How does it feel?" or "What does it look like?" or "How does it sound?" encourages children to use descriptive words.

Regulates emotions and behaviors

Certain types of sensory play can calm children or help them self-regulate.

Arouses interest in learning

When children learn through play, they enjoy the experience more and therefore want to get more involved.
